STORIES FROM THE SHTETL

A NIGHT OF MASTER STORYTELLERS

WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 2, 2011, 8:30 P.M.

SUBTERRANEAN ARTHOUSE

2179 Bancroft Way, Just Above Shattuck

Berkeley, CA

$10 at the door

BERKELEY, CA, October 5, 2011—Will Franken (Best Comedian, SFWEEKLY), Alicia Dattner (SF Comedian of the Year, 2011), Michael Kaye (as seen in the MOTH, Porchlight, Rolling Stone), and Joshua Safran (star of Sundance Festival Documentary, Crime after Crime) will highlight the debut of a new Jew-ish themed storytelling series in Berkeley on Wednesday November 2, 2011 at 8:30 P.M.

The idea for the series struck Michael Kaye when he realized that there wasn’t a regularly appearing storytelling series in Berkeley and there wasn’t one that was Jewishly themed anywhere.  “I want to provide public access to the unique perspective of the Jewish village. While it happens that most of the good storytellers I know, I know from Shul (synagogue),” says founder and performer Michael Kaye,   “I’m also interested in expanding the notion of shtetl to include stories by people who are not Jewish but still have their own experience of the shtetl.  I once heard a story about a mixed-couples support group started by a rabbi—and the non-Jewish spouses had some very funny stories.”

For their first event, Chutzpah chose veteran Bay Area comedians Will Franken and Alicia Dattner as well as a featured Moth storyteller, Michael Kaye and debuting author, Joshua Safran, to launch the series.  “Expect to laugh your tuchas off,” Kaye says.  “And bring your dancing shoes. Seriously.”
